Blog..as Religion? Huh?
When most people read the title of my blog and see ‘Blog As Religion,’ many questions spring to mind.
On this page you can find out the answers to the questions most frequently asked.
About the Blog
Some of the questions in your mind right now might be:
- Who is ‘Blog As Religion’ for?
- What’s religion got to do with blogging?
- Where did this idea come from?
- How can you take an average blog and make it appear religion-like?
- What are some examples of blog-religions?
- Why would I want to take your advice and transform my blog into a religion?
OK, let’s take these questions one at a time, shall we?
Who is Blog As Religion for?
Blog As Religion is for those bloggers who want to create something more than a typical blog with posts and ads plastered all over the place.
It focuses on strategies designed to transform your blog into movement; a business that attracts followers and evolves into a successful, organized profitable business.
Most bloggers depend on advertising to create passive income. That’s fine if all you want is passive income.
But if you want a thriving, successful ‘business,’ you need to create multiple revenue streams that don’t depend on traffic volume as the only driver.
What’s religion got to do with blogging?
My best answer to this question is to suggest you read this post. It lays out pretty clearly the similarities between a successful business (I’m assuming this is the goal for your blog) and a religion.
It’s really a matter of structuring your blogging business like a religion that makes the difference between an average business and on with cult-like status like Apple, Inc., Harley-Davidson or even Elvis.
Where did this idea come from?
I first heard of the correlation between business and religion at a website strategy conference hosted by Psychotactics.com a few years ago. But the idea that a business could mimic the popularity and appeal of a mainstream religion is as old as…well…religion itself.
What business owner wouldn’t want a cult-following that snaps up everything the business produces (iMac, iPhone, iBook) or imitates the charismatic leader (Elvis impersonators, Elvis costumes, wigs, etc.)?
How can you take an average blog and make it appear religion-like?
For this answer, I’m going to refer you to another post on the blog called How the Religion Model Works for a Blog. Again, it’s largely a matter of putting the right structures in place.
What are some examples of blog-religions?
Popular blogs, like religions, have several factors in common. These include:
- A unified central theme or core marketing message
- A charismatic leader at the helm
- A niche-specific language or terminology
- A definitive text resource (Bible, Gita, Testament, etc.)
- A path to conversion
- Devoted disciples and zealous evangelists
Taking these factors into account, I’d suggest that the following businesses/blogs have reached the religion stage of development. I’ve listed their site names and the leader in parentheses:
- ProBlogger.net (Darren Rowse)
- Entrepreneurs-Journey.com (Yaro Starak)
- Psychotactics.com (Sean D’Souza)
- HeartOfBusiness.com (Mark Silver)
- ZenHabits.net (Leo Babauta)
- DavidCo.com (David Allen)
- Elvis.com (Da King!) – Leaders don’t have to be alive!
Why would I want to take your advice and transform my blog into a religion?
If -after looking closely at the examples I’ve just given you- you don’t agree that it’s better way to structure your business, then I’d wish you well and say that this probably isn’t for you. However, if you agree that the above blogs and businesses are the veritable cream of the crop, then I’d suggest you have your answer.
About Me
I was raised in a very religion-conscious household by parents who taught me to respect all religions even if the one imposed upon me didn’t always seem to. I grew up attending church in a Christian Protestant tradition, graduated from a Christian (Southern Baptist) college, attended a post-graduate seminary for a year only to decide that my religion wasn’t my ‘cuppa’ Joe after all.
I do have a spiritual path that I follow today, but it’s a far cry from the church-life foisted upon me early on in life. In fact, my path is more Zen Buddhism than anything else…but it works for me.

That said, I’ve also been around the proverbial Internet Marketing block a few times. I’ve written two books for small businesses and hundreds of articles for both print and online audiences. I completed Psychotactics’ Protege Program as well as Yaro Starak’s Blog Mastermind. I’ve run several websites and still write two blogs: this one and Solo-Dad which addresses more personal life issues.
I have a degree in biology and a doctoral degree in medicine. I’ve been a physician and surgeon, a college dean, college president, a freelance copywriter and small business marketing coach. I’ve been blogging for about three years.
I live with my 13-year old son, ‘Little Elvis’ (LE) on the coast in Rio Del Mar, California – about 80 miles south of San Francisco. I also have three adult children, Bethany, Benjamin, and Jeremy, who are busy making their own way in the world.
These days it’s just me, LE and Buddy -our black Labrador- in our beach bungalow located 2 blocks from Rio Del Mar State Beach. (Hey, someone has to live here!) We often walk on the beach before dinner and hang out together at Starbucks or Peets Coffee & Tea sipping a coffee (frappuccino/freddo for him, regular java for me) and reading our books…or in my case, my Kindle.
And, uh…Baz?
It’s a nickname I picked up in England over 30-something years ago when I was a free-wheeling, motorcycle-riding lad of eighteen trying desperately to find myself. My British family, who took me in for almost 6 months, bestowed the name Baz on me almost immediately.
In England (and in Australia they tell me), those with the name of Barry are called Bazza, which is a nickname of sorts for Barry. The short version of Bazza is …well…Baz. The nickname stuck and my closest friends refer to me this way. So feel free to call me Baz!
